The Bob Jones High School varsity cheerleaders recently were named champions in two cheer camp areas of competition. The Bob Jones junior varsity team also brought home a championship title.

One of the largest cheer camps to be held in the state, more than 40 varsity and junior varsity cheer teams made up of more than 800 cheerleaders competed in the Universal Cheerleading Association event.

The camp was held in Tuscaloosa.

Competing against other cheer teams throughout the southeast, the BJHS varsity team won the extreme routine and cheer competition. In addition to the team wins, all seniors on the squad were named UCA All-Stars and received medals.

Varsity cheer team seniors are Lindsay Atnip, Amanda Brown, Denise Gerrity, Erin Laing, Alicia Mooren, Cortney Smith and Rachel Underwood.

Three of the seniors, Gerrity, Smith and Underwood also earned the option to tryout for UCA staff positions after graduation.

Same as the varsity team, the junior varsity squad won the extreme routine in JV competition and placed third overall in cheer competition.

Six members of the junior varsity squad were awarded UCA All-Star medals. They were Kristen Conerly, Brittany Griffis, Katey McKaig, Shay McKee, Stephanie Stratford and Riana Trahan.

Cheerleaders named as UNC All-Stars will have the opportunity to participate in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York in November.

Varsity cheerleaders other than Atnip, Brown, Gerrity, Laing, Mooren, Smith and Underwood are Natasha Austin, Allison Coleman, Kristine Disbrow, Kelley Eacret, Katelyn Goode, Jenny Groux, Samantha Kyle, Ashley Martin, Emily Parker, Alicia Pruner, Kecenia Stevenson, Brewer Wilbanks and Lauren Woltjen.

Members of the JV squad other than Conerly, Griffis, McKaig, McKee, Stratford and Trahan are Lauren Blair, Rachel Cechovic, Gabby Davis, Kelsey Davis, Lauren Fant, Brianna Gordon, Annie Jackson, Natalie Jankowski, Kim Massey, Kaylyn McClendon, Larissa Nall, Kaitlyn O'Hara, Rachel Richardson and Ahston Woodard.

"I am so proud of how well both squads presented themselves at camp this year. They really pulled together as a team and brought numerous awards back to the city of Madison. This strong start now establishes a solid foundation from which we can build as we look forward to UCA regional and state competition later in the fall," Shannon Pike, head coach of the BJHS competitive cheerleading program said.

The BJHS varsity squad placed first in regional and state competition last year and fifth overall in the nation at UCA national competition.

The junior varsity squad placed first in regional competition, second in state competition and fourth overall at UCA national competition.

Both squads have their sights set higher this year and are already working hard toward making that goal a reality, Pike said.
